Epson Receipt Printer Printing Blank Receipts – How to Fix
A receipt printer that outputs blank paper is one of the more disruptive POS failures a business can face — it looks like it’s working, feeds paper normally, and gives no error, but nothing prints.
If your Epson receipt printer is producing blank receipts, the fix is almost always one of a handful of causes, and most of them are solvable in a few minutes without sending the unit anywhere. This guide is for retail operators, restaurant managers, and IT staff troubleshooting blank output on an Epson thermal receipt printer.

Why Epson Receipt Printers Output Blank Receipts
Blank receipts on a thermal printer come down to one thing: the heat from the print head is not reaching the heat-sensitive coating on the paper.
How Thermal Printing Works
Epson receipt printers are thermal printers — they don’t use ink or toner. Instead, they apply heat through a print head to paper that has a heat-sensitive chemical coating on one side. When the coating reaches the right temperature, it darkens and forms the printed text and graphics. No heat contact with the coated side, no visible output.
The Most Common Causes of Blank Output
The four most common causes of blank receipt output are:
- Paper loaded backwards — the uncoated side is facing the print head
- Dirty or failed print head — residue or wear is blocking heat transfer
- Incompatible or low-quality paper — the coating is absent, too light, or degraded
- Driver or software issue — the printer is receiving a print job but not generating the right heat commands
Start with the paper orientation — it’s the cause the vast majority of the time.
Check the Paper Roll Orientation
Open the paper compartment and look at how the roll is loaded. On thermal paper, the coated side is the side that should face outward — toward the print head — as the paper feeds through. Most thermal rolls feed from the bottom of the roll upward; the coated side faces up (toward the print head) as it unrolls.
The easiest way to identify the coated side is to scratch it with your fingernail. The coated side will show a faint dark mark from the friction heat; the uncoated side will not. Once you’ve identified the coated side, reload the roll so that side faces the print head. Run a self-test print (usually by holding the feed button while powering the printer on) to confirm. If you get a printed test page, the paper orientation was the issue.
Clean the Print Head
If the paper is loaded correctly and the printer is still outputting blank receipts, the print head may be fouled with paper dust, adhesive residue from label stock, or oxidation from humidity exposure.
Power the printer off before cleaning. Open the paper compartment and locate the print head — it’s the small bar that presses against the paper as it feeds through. Use an IPA-saturated cotton swab (isopropyl alcohol, 70% or higher) and gently wipe along the full length of the print head in one direction. Do not scrub back and forth aggressively.
Let the print head dry completely before loading paper and powering back on. Run a self-test print to check the output quality. Significant improvement in print darkness after cleaning confirms the head was fouled. If print quality is still poor or inconsistent, the head may have physical wear that cleaning won’t resolve.
Test with a Known-Good Paper Roll
Before assuming the print head is faulty, rule out a paper problem by testing with a different roll — ideally one from a different supplier or a sealed roll you know is fresh.
Thermal paper degrades over time, especially if stored in warm, humid, or brightly lit conditions. Degraded paper loses its coating sensitivity and produces faint or blank output even with a fully functional print head. Paper that’s been exposed to heat before use — left in a delivery vehicle in summer, stored near a heat source — can partially pre-activate and lose its sensitivity.
Load a fresh roll, run a self-test, and compare. If the test page prints clearly on fresh paper but poorly on the old stock, the paper is the issue. Reorder from a reputable supplier and specify BPA-free thermal paper rated for your printer model.
Check Driver and Print Settings
If the hardware checks out — paper is loaded correctly, the head is clean, fresh paper produces the same result — the issue may be in the driver or POS software configuration.
Verify the printer is selected as the correct output device in your POS software and that the correct Epson driver is installed. A driver mismatch can cause the printer to receive a job, feed paper, and output nothing visible because the heat commands aren’t being sent correctly. In Windows, open Devices and Printers, right-click the Epson printer, and run a test page — if that test page prints, the hardware is functioning and the issue is in how the POS software is routing output.
Also check that the printer’s paper size and density settings in the driver match the paper you’re using. Some Epson models have a print density adjustment accessible through the driver preferences — a setting at minimum density can produce output that appears blank under poor lighting.
